Water Hardness by ZIP Code

Enter a ZIP code or city name to see your tap water hardness in mg/L and grains per gallon (gpg), its USGS hardness class, and the water softener size your home needs. Covers 16,561 US cities.

1. Check your water hardness

How ZIP lookup works: the hardness dataset is published by city, not by ZIP. We take your ZIP code's Census centroid and show the value reported for the nearest city in the dataset - check the distance shown on the result. On a private well? City data does not apply to well water; test it with a hardness test kit instead.

2. Water softener sizing calculator

Industry-standard sizing: grains per day = people x gallons per person per day x hardness (gpg). Weekly capacity need = daily grains x 7 days x 1.3 safety factor, rounded up to the next standard softener size (24,000 / 32,000 / 40,000 / 48,000 / 64,000 grains).

USGS water hardness classification

Classmg/L (as CaCO3)Grains per gallon (gpg)What it means
Soft0 - 600 - 3.5Little scale; a softener is usually unnecessary.
Moderately hard61 - 1203.6 - 7.0Some spotting and scale over time; softening is a preference.
Hard121 - 1807.1 - 10.5Noticeable scale on fixtures and heaters; a softener pays off.
Very hardOver 180Over 10.5Heavy scale; a softener is strongly recommended to protect plumbing and appliances.

Classification per the USGS Water Science School. Conversion: gpg = mg/L ÷ 17.1.

How softener sizing works

Multiply the people in your home by the water each person uses per day (75 gallons is the standard planning figure) and by your water hardness in grains per gallon. That is the grains of hardness a softener must remove each day. Sizing for seven days between regenerations, plus a 30% reserve (the x1.3 factor), keeps the resin bed from exhausting before regeneration day. Example: 4 people x 75 gallons x 10 gpg = 3,000 grains per day; x 7 x 1.3 = 27,300 grains per week, so a 32,000-grain softener is the right size.
